The U.S. Supreme Court's 2015 decision in Reed v. Town of Gilbert raised a number of critical concerns regarding the regulation of temporary and other signs. This webinar offers tools for planners charged with evaluating and writing sign regulations in the post-Reed era. It provides guidance on navigating complex and vexing legal issues surrounding content neutrality and suggest options for developing easy-to-administer-and-enforce sign codes that allow reasonable use for individuals and businesses. Case studies illustrate how several communities changed their codes to comply with Reed.
Reed v. Town of Gilbert - One Year Later

This webcast looks at the U. S. Supreme Court's June 2015 Reed v. Town of Gilbert decision and the impacts it has had on sign regulation. Reed v. Town of Gilbert was the first sign-related decision to come from the High Court in 20 years, and it affects almost every sign code in the country. The program provides an update on circuit court and state case law as well as explores three community sign regulations and the changes made in response to Reed.
Breathing New Life into Failing Commercial Corridors

As existing retail development relocates into new market areas, local jurisdictions are often faced with what to do with the swath of aging and most often vacant retail centers and buildings left. Speakers provide a brief background as to what created this large inventory of vacant and/or underperforming retail centers; the market barriers to redevelopment of these properties; why this issue is important to local governments; and examples of successful public and private initiatives that have reinvigorated failing retail centers. This issue is of significant importance to cities and counties across the US as suburban communities age and tax base erodes.
